FIRST LEGO League Jr. Challenge

What is FIRST LEGO League Jr.?

FIRST LEGO League Jr. is designed to introduce STEM concepts to kids ages 6 to 10 while exciting them through a brand they know and love − LEGO®.

Guided by adult coaches and FIRST® Core Values, students build models using LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 and create Show Me posters to present what they learned. The program focuses on building interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through a real-world challenge – to be solved by research, critical thinking, and imagination.

Main Coach of I.C.E.A. FIRST LEGO League Jr:

Ms. Wang, graduated from Stanford University majoring in Computer Science, is currently working for OCZ Storage Solutions as a principal firmware engineer. She is also a science enthusiast and she believes that the fun science experiments for kids will significantly develop their skills at goal-setting, planning, and problem-solving and it also nurtures intellectual curiosity, helping kids acquire new ways of asking questions and understanding the world. She has 3 years of First Lego Jr Coach experience.

Chess 4 Kids

Why Child Playing Chess:

Playing the game of Chess on a regular basis right from the childhood improves the learning, thinking, analytical power, and decision-making ability of the child. Chess makes the child learn how to strategize aspects of the game and life. In addition, a child can also learn the importance of foresight, and planning. Children playing chess from an early age exhibit extraordinary memory skills. Chess also helps in improving concentration and academic performance of the child.

Math for Coding

Coding or programming is a practice to use a language to communicate with computer and let it do things for you. Regardless of what language you are using, the fun part will be how you are going to understand and interpret your problem to solve and find an approach to get there.

Although computer might be more and more intelligent, such as it can guess what you might like, it can mimic some voice to talk to you, or draw a picture like an artist, the fundamental is still the same, you need to know some discrete math to be able to let computer to understand you.

This class is to help kids preparing some math for coding, developing the reasoning skills by understanding logic, learning some algorithms to make things more intelligent and even knowing some fun math stories and history.

Note:

    1. Students need to bring his/her own laptop or tablet.
    2. Students will need to have their own gmail account for the communication and online homework.
    3. Although not required, students are highly encouraged to have some knowledge of arithmetic,  algebra ahead, thus this class might be good for kids from age 7 to 10.
    4. In order to have more fun, the students will be randomly grouped as teams to compete with each other in the class, so there will some team work in the class.
