Class Description
Algebra serves as a foundation for learning about mathematics and it is one of the most important topics in AMC 10. This class brings together advanced problem solvers for 60minute classes twice a week. The course covers expressions, exponents and radicals, linear equations and inequalities, multiple variables, ratio and proportion, factoring quadratics, complex numbers and the quadratic formula.
The course focuses on the interconnections between the various Algebra topics contained in the course syllabus and how each contributes to problemsolving. Problem solving techniques and strategies are finetuned throughout the course, and students are continually tasked with connecting Algebra concepts learned in different units in order to synthesize solutions to complex problems. The emphasis on comprehension, critical thinking and problem solving makes this class fun yet challenging. Students must be strong in Arithmetic and problem solving to be successful in this course.

Introduction to Algebra: Art of Problem Solving – Richard Rusczyk (not required)
Assessment
Students are to be prepared for every class. Formative assessment takes place and may include a quiz or the collection and correction of homework.
Attendance & Late Work
In order to be successful in this class regular attendance is mandatory. Missing class time makes it much more difficult for the student to keep up with the material. There will be a homework assignment due roughly every class. Homework will be due at the start of class. It is the responsibility and expectation of the student to check deadline for assignments and to complete assignments on time. We provide weekly homework tutoring for students to assist with their homework, the attendance of homework tutoring is optional.
