ICEA Kids Chess Workshop #1

2023-04-16 (Sunday) 9am – 11:30am

Thank you to all who played and took part in this workshop!

Held in the recognizable ICEA backyard, 20 kids from ages 5 to 13 participated in a practice tournament aimed at familiarizing them with tournament-style play. The kids were introduced to notation as well as playing with clocks in 10-minute games with a 5-second increment. Four quads were led by Coaches Austin, Felix, Esther, and Alex, and the kids had a good time playing with each other in the rounds as well as during casual blitz games. Afterwards, they enjoyed snacks and drinks, including cupcakes for Felix’s birthday. Additionally, a simul was held for all of the kids to play against the coaches at once, which turned out to be a challenging yet fun experience for them. They learned many tips and tricks from the coaches while playing exciting chess and making new friends.

The kids played against each other in quads of 4-6 people. In Quad A, Xichen and Amy tied for first place with 2.5/3! In Quad B, there was a three-way tie between Constantine, Joshua, and Taje, all on 2/3 points! In Quad C, the winner was Austin L. with a perfect score of 3/3. In Quad D, Zaven also won with a perfect score of 3/3.

The registration for the second ICEA Kids Chess Workshop has been posted, and it would be a great opportunity to harness chess skills as well as have fun. In the next workshop, trophies and medals will be presented to the winners of each quad, so make sure to keep practicing and working hard!
