About Speaker Prof. Li’an Xie

Dr. Xie received his Ph.D. in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the University of Miami, FL in 1992. He is currently a professor in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, North Carolina State University, specializing in computer modeling and prediction of weather and climate. He served as a committee member of the US Weather Research Program on Hurricanes and Coastal Meteorology, was an invited lecturer for the training programs of the United Nations World Meteorological Organization, organized storm surge forecast training workshops for the US National Weather Service, and published over 200 articles on weather and climate, including as an invited author for the Encyclopedia of Atmospheric Sciences. He received a number of honors and awards in his career, including two appreciation awards from the US National Weather Service for his collaborative research solving real-world weather forecast problems, and an award from the Qingdao Meteorological Bureau for his contribution to the real-time wind forecasts during the 2008 Summer Olympics. He is also a recipient of the Governor’s award for his outstanding outreach services to the public.
