ICEA Chess Camp: Prepare for Chess Tournaments!

This camp is designed for chess beginners who are ready to take the leap into chess tournaments, and be ready for our Annual Championship in December. Over three dynamic sessions, students will build the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for successful tournament play.

 

Prerequisites:

• Basic Knowledge of Chess Rules – Students should already know how to play chess, including piece movement, basic check and checkmate, and castling.
• Ability to Focus for One-Hour Sessions – Each session requires focus and active participation to simulate tournament settings.
• Commitment to Improvement – This camp is ideal for players eager to deepen their skills and take their game to the next level.

Camp Highlights:

1. Introduction to Tournament Play – Learn the fundamentals of competitive chess, including game timing, how to record moves using notation, and the principles of fair play.
2. Opening Principles and Basic Strategies – Develop a solid foundation in opening strategies, tactics, and essential gameplay techniques for a strong start in every match.
3. Simulated Tournament – Participate in a mock tournament to practice under real-game conditions, using clocks and notation to gain confidence in a USCF-style setting.

Camp: Sundays 10am – 11:30am PT (11/17, 12/1, 12/8)

• Chess sets and clocks will be provided during class.

Coach Felix (Candidate Master):

Felix Guo is a 8th grader at Windward School. He is the founder and president of ICEA Chess and has been teaching chess classes for more than 200 children since 2020. A USChess Candidate Master with a peak rating of 2173, Felix led the ICEA Chess Team to victory in the K-8 Team Championship at the 2024 SoCal SuperStates Championship. His personal achievements include being the co-champion of the 2023 North American Youth Championship in the U12 section, the U12 Blitz Champion at the 2023 Pan-American Youth Chess Festival, and the Champion of the 2023 World Open Blitz Championship (U2000 Section).
